It’s dedicated to Lord Shiva and is also referred to as the “Tryambakam Mantra,” named after the three-eyed Lord Shiva. It is widely known for its healing and life-nurturing properties and is recited to ward off untimely death and calamities.

In Sanskrit

ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम्।
उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान्मृत्योर्मुक्षीय मामृतात्।।

Transliteration in English

Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam
Urvarukamiva Bandhanan Mrityor Mukshiya Maamritat

Interpretation

“Om, We worship the three-eyed One (Lord Shiva), who is fragrant (enriched with spiritual qualities) and who nourishes all beings. May He liberate us from (the eternal cycle of birth and) death. May He lead us to immortality, just as the cucumber is released from its bondage (the vine to which it is attached).”

The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra is essentially a call to Lord Shiva for healing and liberation, and it is often chanted with a genuine devotion for spiritual awakening and as a homage to Lord Shiva.
